As opposed to most of my WRIT 340 classmates, I’m not even near my last year of college; however, much like most of my WRIT 340 classmates, in less than a month I’ll be gone from USC for good. In about 5 months I’ll be moving to Hong Kong which I'm incredibly excited for, but what I want to talk about is what is going to happen from now to then.
Everyone I’ve talked to strongly suggested doing “something” during freshmen summer, and I agree. I’ve been told : “do it for the resume”, “do it for the experience”, “it’ll help you figure things out”... And I guess I’m doing it for all these things (plus the salary).
As I’m sure you all know, getting an internship as a freshman is quite an endeavor. Generally the only way to get one without selling your soul is through your family connections. Now, I’m not a big fan of nepotism myself, but sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do. So I’m going to be working where my dad works this summer, which I’m actually really excited about. It’s a great opportunity, the internship perfectly matches what I was looking for, it's a great resume builder and ultimately I'm going to learn an incredible amount.
This is a 3 month internship, I’ll be rotating between different offices. I’ll be attending meetings, programming with python, working on mergers and acquisitions, and so much more I don’t even know about yet. This may not seem all that amazing to many of you, but as my first reel work experience, this really seems like a dream.
This is my first work experience and, even if I cheated a little bit to get there, I’m still incredibly happy about it. Interestingly enough, I think my dad is actually even happier than I am; at least that’s how I’ve been interpreting his sudden rise in mood ever since I’ve confirmed I was going with him. I know for a lot of people, working with their father would be pretty dreadful, but for some reason, I think he’ll be much easier to handle at work than he is at home. I’m prepared to be proven wrong but nonetheless, having your dad right there on your first job has some comforting aspect to it.
Nathan this is so refreshing to hear, it's funny I was just commenting on another classmates post about it being our senior year, but I'm glad you've still got some time left, I'm actually jealous. But make sure whatever you do you make the most out of it!
ReplyDeleteHey Nathan! Happy to hear that you're excited to be working with your dad. Don't feel bad about how you got your internship! I myself have gotten a lot of my work experience working with my own dad and it has been great. Any work experience is great and it seem like you're genuinely interested in what you'll be doing. I also love Python so I hope programming is a good experience for you!
ReplyDeleteHey Nathan! Honestly kudos to you for even getting an internship (especially in this economy haha)! Recruitment can be insanely stressful and it honestly blows my mind that freshmen also need to start looking for summer internships as it just seems so early. While career is important, I think it's important to remind yourself that its okay to relax and just enjoy college/the people around you (trust me, 4 years goes by super fast).
ReplyDeleteHey Nathan, congrats on the internship and it's great to hear that you are looking to the future so early. Also, moving to Honk Kong sounds like a big change in environment but really fun! Good Luck on your endeavors.
