Chronologically I come from Paris, where I was born and where I was first raised. Although I feel like much more of a New Yorker. That city is my first memory, my childhood, it shaped me much more than Paris ever did. Yet most recently if anything I’m from Lille in the north of France where I spent the last 4 years of my life. So where am I from ? I have no idea ; but I know exactly where I’m going for the next 2 years of my life.
Well I know where geographically, but one of these places I haven't even been to and the other I've only briefly visited. So in practice I have no idea where I’m going. But I love it and I’d say that’s thanks to my mother. She spent years abroad when she was young almost on a whim. I’ll admit that's a little intense for me, I’m more like my father in that sense, I like to have a well thought out plan for such decisions.
Although there are similarities in our characters I also strive to be a very distinct individual which I would say I am. In my temperament, my opinions, and judgment most of all, I’ve always been the annoying kid that questions everything. To some extent that has allowed me to develop my own goals.
Yet I don’t believe I’m completely free of the expectations they have for me either. Not to say that’s a bad thing, as they’ve set a very high standard and that is motivating or at the very least was and pushed me to get as far as I am today. But their expectations are not the ones I’m most subject to,
I grew up in New York and while I lived there I met one of my very best friends whose father, Richard, has been the most inspiring man to come into my life. Richard is an orphan and what’s amazing to me is just how far he’s come in life and how much merit he has. He built his life through incredible hardships and continues to be the kindest man I know.
That man has been in my life for a very long time now and has become almost a second father figure to me. Seeing as his son was my best friend I’ve been to a great many places with them including to Menorca where we went scuba diving with turtles. Actually I would say turtles are the animal I connect with the most. I would be quite incapable of explaining it but they seemed like such relaxed animals, almost invulnerable in such a hostile environment. Perhaps I recognise myself in that level of serenity ?
Another memorable experience was when Richard’s son and I tried for hours to cut down a dead tree and we realised just how difficult it was going to be. Turns out it took us about 5 hours to cut down a half rotten tree a foot wide at most. But we did eventually get there after much hardship and it was Richard who encouraged us to persevere, a lesson I carry with me still.

Hi Nathan, I read your "from" New York, I just spent the past year living there. It is one of the most amazing cities, I am so jealous you get to call it one of your homes.
ReplyDeleteHey Nathan. Personally, I don't find questioning everything annoying. I actually appreciate those people because they don't choose to take things for face value right off the bat and they seem genuinely curious.

ReplyDelete*Hi Nathan! Richard sounds like he has truly inspired you to achieve great things. I think it is interesting New York is such an important part of your childhood. Although I have never been, I hope to travel there one day when I have the opportunity.
DeleteHi Nathan, Paris and New York are places I both really want to visit but haven't gone yet. I am hoping you can give me some good recommendations!
